Thunar - Bulk Rename Files

To “bulk rename” files means to change the name of multiple files at once using some rule that applies to at least one of the files.

Accessing The Bulk Renamer

Thunar includes a bulk renamer which can be run separately using the command thunar -B or from within Thunar by selecting two or more files in the main area and pressing F2 or choosing EditRename… from the main menu.

Basic Functionality

Choosing What Part of the Filename to Modify

The Bulk Renamer can be applied to only the name (base name) of the files, to only the extension of the files, or both the name and the extension of the files (the full filename). You can select between these options using the drop-down menu on the left just underneath the preview pane.

Choosing a Renaming Mode

Thunar supports a variety of different renaming modes which allow you to use different kinds of rules to rename by. Thunar currently supports the following modes:

  • Audio Tags (plugin)
  • Insert / Overwrite
  • Numbering
  • Remove Characters
  • Search & Replace
  • Uppercase / Lowercase

When you select one of these modes from the drop-down list, you are shown a preview of your changes in the New Name column, as seen in the example above.

Previewing Changes

The bulk renamer has a preview pane in the upper part of the renamer window. This will show you how the renamer would change your filenames given the current options. It is updated automatically as you change modes, edit the renaming rules, or change which parts of the file name to modify. This makes it easy to see what the renamer would do as you set it up.

Applying Changes

Once you are satisfied with how the renamer will modify your selected filenames, you can use the Apply button in the lower left corner to write the changes to your all the selected files (keeping the window open). Alternatively, you can use the Done button to apply the changes and close the window.
